Impressionism Oil Paintings including
dockscape and marine
Photography in the nineteenth century both
challenged painters to be true to nature and
encouraged them to exploit aspects of the
painting medium, like color, that
photography lacked. This divergence away
from photographic realism appears in the
work of a group of artists who from 1874 to
1886 exhibited together, independently of
the Salon. The leaders of the independent
movement were
Claude Monet,
August Renoir,
Edgar Degas,
Berthe Morisot,
and
Mary Cassatt.
They became known as Impressionists because
a newspaper critic thought they were
painting mere sketches or impressions. The
Impressionists on oilpaintingfactory.com,
however, considered their works finished. |

Many Impressionists oil
painting of dosckscape and marine painted
pleasant scenes of middle class urban life,
extolling the leisure time that the
industrial revolution had won for middle
class society. In
Renoir's
luminous oil painting Luncheon of the
Boating Party, for example, young men and
women eat, drink, talk, and flirt with a joy
for life that is reflected in sparkling
colors. The sun filtered through the orange
striped awning colors everything and
everyone in the party with its warm light.
The diners' glances cut across a balanced
and integrated composition that reproduces a
very delightful scene of modem middle class
life.
Dockscape Marine Oil Paintings
From the early 1860s to the early 1890s, the
French northern coast was transformed from
the preserve of local sea-faring populations
to the adopted province of fashionable
holidaymakers. During the summer months the
coast saw its beaches, fishing villages on
oilpaintingfactory.com and modest ports
transformed into the leisured world which
inspired the Impressionists, notably Monet,
turned their backs on the depictions of
people and used their new approach to
painting to capture the effects of weather
and light on the coastline. The artists
painted many dosckscape marine oil paintings
by Frenchmen active during the middle of the
19th century. |

Manet
painted oil painting of the harbor at
Boulogne, the Bay of Arcachon, Berck's beach
and even views of Holland and Venice.
Whether it's moonlight, the deck of a ship,
a game of croquet, a boat being tarred or
two people seated by a window, your eyes
will feast on an astonishing range of blues
and greens. No less a critic than Clement
Greenberg almost 40 years ago observed, "Manet's
still-lifes and seascapes show a greater
consistency of approach, as well as a
steadier level of quality, than anything
else in the total body of his works in oil." |

Other standouts include
Renoir's
depictions of waves and a sunset at sea from
1879 and 1882, respectively. Only a master
could move blues and yellows across the
surface of his canvases such as these. You
may never again associate him with
Michelin-like nudes. What about
Claude Monet?
A selection of his work spans seventeen
years, beginning with an 1864 view of the
lighthouse at Honfleur. You'll find swift
sailboats oil paintnigs, elegant women, lots
of weather effects.

the best-loved impressionism dockscape
marine oil paintings by many popular
