Dutch painter, one of the most important landscape painters of his generation. Barend Cornelis Koekkoek received his first lessons from his father, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851), and also studied at the Tekenacademie in Middelburg. Subsequently Barend Cornelis Koekkoek became a pupil at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie under Jean Augustin Daiwaille (1786-1850). Barend Cornelis Koekkoek first participated in an exhibition in 1820. Between 1826 and 1834 Barend Cornelis Koekkoek travelled constantly, visiting the Harz Mountains, the Rhine and the Ruhr. His first great success came in 1829 when Barend Cornelis Koekkoek won the gold medal of the Amsterdam society Felix Meritis with Landscape with a Rainstorm Threatening (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum). The painting is notable for its accurate and sober study of nature; it marked Koekkoek’s commitment to a style of landscape divorced both from the predominantly topographical approach of the 18th century and from the flat and decorative manner of contemporary mural painting.

Koekkoek married the artist Elize Therese Daiwaille and moved to Cleve with her in 1834. The Rhine landscape and the forests of Cleve had been held dear by artists since the 17th century and Koekkoek was also inspired by them. They matched his image of the perfect landscape and it was in Cleve that Koekkoek's style reached maturity. Barend Cornelis Koekkoek painted many landscapes here ranging from extensive river valleys to forest views dominated by one or more oak trees and these works earned him great fame. The artist had many wealthy patrons from the rich merchant classes in Holland and in 1839 King Willem III bought A View of a Forest with Cattle, a large painting that was rewarded with a gold medal at the Hague Salon held that same year. The Russian Tsar Alexander II was so impressed by this work that Barend Cornelis Koekkoek commissioned an identical one from the artist, which illustrated how quickly Koekkoek gained an international reputation. King Willem III commissioned a series of landscapes by Koekkoek which further enhanced the artist's reputation.

Barend Cornelis Koekkoek is without doubt the most important landscape painter of the Dutch Romantic movement. During his lifetime Barend Cornelis Koekkoek came to be known as 'Prince of landscape painting' and up to this day his role as leader of this genre remains unchallenged.

He was born in Middelburg in 1803. B.C. Koekkoek attended the Middelburg Drawing Academy and also the Academy in Amsterdam between 1826 and 1827. It was here that his interest in the 17th century painters such as Hobbema and Wijnants developed.

Koekkoek moved to Kleve in 1834. The Rhine landscape matched his image of the perfect landscape and it was in Kleve that Koekkoek's style reached maturity. Between 1826 and 1862 B.C. Koekkoek was a regular exhibitor in The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam and Barend Cornelis Koekkoek won medals at the Paris Salon in 1840 and 1845. Barend Cornelis Koekkoek was elected to membership of the Amsterdam and St. Petersburg Academies and wa awarded the Netherlands Order of the Lion and the Belgian Order of Leopold.

Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (Middelburg, 11 oktober 1803 - 5 april 1862) was een schilder van Nederlandse afkomst. Koekkoek werd geboren in Middelburg als oudste van vier zonen. Zijn vader was Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek en zijn moeder Anna van Koolwijk. Zijn vader was schilder van rivier- en zeegezichten.

Hij studeerde onder andere aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten te Amsterdam. B.C. Koekkoek was al in zijn tijd beroemd om zijn weergave van landschappen. "De natuur is de volmaaktste schilderij" hield B.C. Koekoek zijn toehoorders voor en het geeft tegelijkertijd aan wat zijn inspiratiebron was.

In 1833 trouwde Koekkoek met Elise Thérèse Daiwaille. Zij was de dochter van zijn leermeester en vriend Jean Augustin Daiwaille. Zij kregen vijf dochters. In november 1858 krijgt Koekkoek een beroerte. Hij sterft op 5 april 1862.

De meeste werken van B.C. Koekkoek zijn landschapsschilderijen. De schilderkunst is als romantisch te bestempelen daar het niet exacte maar poëtische weergaven van de natuur zijn. Doorgaans bestaat het schilderij uit een kasteel of ander gebouw op de achtergrond. De natuur beslaat het grootste gedeelte van het doek waarin dan mensen in rondlopen/staan/zitten. Opmerkelijk is de rol van het licht in de doeken van B.C. Koekkoek. Een element in zijn schilderkunst waar B.C. Koekkoek zelf veel belang aan hechtte getuige zijn uitspraak uit 1841: "Beschouwt vooral de werking van het licht want dat is de ziel van alles." Het vallen van het licht accentueert een gedeelte van de schilderij zodat het oog van de toeschouwer automatisch op dat gedeelte van de schilderij valt.
