The only son of a village schoolmaster, his precocious drawing skill won him an annual grant from the state. In 1863 Léon Augustin L'hermitte went to Paris and became a student at the Petite Ecole. Jean-Charles Cazin, a fellow pupil, became a lifelong friend and Lhermitte later got to know Alphonse Legros, Henri Fantin-Latour, Jules Dalou and Rodin, who had all studied at the school. In 1864 his charcoal drawing the Banks of the Marne near Alfort was exhibited at the Salon. Léon Augustin L'hermitte continued to exhibit his drawings at the Salon until 1889.

In 1866 his first oil painting, Violets in a Glass, Shells, Screen, was exhibited at the Salon, and Léon Augustin L'hermitte produced his first etching, for his friend Frederic Henriet’s book Payagiste aux champs. In 1869 Léon Augustin L'hermitte made his first visit to London, where Léon Augustin L'hermitte met Legros. On his second visit in 1871 Legros recommended him as an illustrator for Works of Art in the Collections of England Drawn by E. Lie and introduced him to the dealer Durand-Ruel, who agreed to sell several of his drawings. In 1873 Durand-Ruel sent some of Lhermitte’s works to the Dudley Gallery for the first of the annual Black and White exhibitions and Lhermitte subsequently became a regular participant.

Lhermitte won a third-class medal in the Salon of 1874 for his painting The Harvest that was bought by the state. In 1879 Degas noted in a sketchbook his intention to invite Lhermitte to exhibit with the Impressionists, but Lhermitte never participated in any of their shows. The Tavern, exhibited in the Salon of 1881, initiated the monumental series of paintings on the life of the agricultural worker that came closest to justifying van Gogh’s admiring appellation “Millet the Second”. The next in the series, Harvesters’ Payday was bought for the state and became the artist’s best-known work. The Harvest, third in the series, was included with ten charcoal drawings in the Exposition Nationale in 1883. Lhermitte received the Legion d'honneur in 1884 when Léon Augustin L'hermitte exhibited the fourth monumental composition the Grape Harvest (New York, Met.).

Lhermitte was commissioned in 1886 to do two large portrait groups to decorate the Sorbonne. The first, Claude Bernard in his Laboratory at the Colle de France, was shown in the Salon of 1889. In 1888 Andre Theuriet asked him to illustrate La Vie Rustique, a major commission for which Lhermitte used the many drawings of peasant life Léon Augustin L'hermitte had already executed. Lhermitte was a founding member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1890. Lhermitte was elected to fill Jacques Henner’s chair in painting at the Institut in 1905. Léon Augustin L'hermitte continued to exhibit in the first decades of the 20th century, when Léon Augustin L'hermitte was generally seen as a relic of a bygone era, although his style later had an influence on Socialist Realism. Increasingly Léon Augustin L'hermitte worked in pastel, his draughtsman’s skill ever in evidence, producing some sensitive portraits and peasant scenes reminiscent of the earlier and more powerful depictions that van Gogh had cited as “an ideal”.

All of his rustic scenes are full of observation and naturalness, executed in a manner which is less and less rugged, and a technique that gains in suppleness. The artist has now discovered his own easy and definitive way of expressing himself and appears in full possession of a subject, which Léon Augustin L'hermitte treats with ease and without weakness. Léon Augustin L'hermitte is the painter of the field worker and rustic landscapes, the theater of his work. In this genre, Léon Augustin L'hermitte shows a true vision of personages and of the things that surround them.

Many artists during the latter half of the nineteenth century relied on imagery introduced by earlier generations of painters. At the same time, however, these artists, such as Léon-Augustin Lhermitte, rejuvenated these older themes by executing them with progressive techniques. Lhermitte took the recognized imagery of the peasant and rural life and reintroduced it by using more contemporary media, such as pastels. For these innovations, Lhermitte was praised and admired by his contemporaries, such as Vincent Van Gogh who wrote that “If every month Le Monde Illustré published one of his compositions…it would be a great pleasure for me to be able to follow it. It is certain that for years I have not seen anything as beautiful as this scene by Lhermitte…I am too preoccupied by Lhermitte this evening to be able to talk of other things.” (quoted in Léon Lhermitte 1844-1925, ex. cat., Beverley Hills: New York: Galerie Michael; Altman/Burke Fine Art, 1989, unpaginated) Admired by contemporaries and modern audiences alike, Lhermitte brought the image of rural life and landscape into the twentieth century.

Léon-Augustin Lhermitte was born on July 31, 1844 in Mont-Saint-Père in the Aisne region of north-eastern France. His earliest experience with the arts was copying works out of popular illustrated magazines and studying the work of earlier French painters, such as the Realists. His father, a schoolteacher, encouraged his work by allowing him to sketch. The young Lhermitte’s talent quickly became apparent to others. His father introduced his drawings to Count Walewski, then minister at the École des Beaux-Arts. Walewski was so impressed by the young mans’ abilities that Léon Augustin L'hermitte offered him a scholarship of 600 francs permitting him to enroll in the École Impériale de Dessin in the early 1860s, where Léon Augustin L'hermitte became a student of Horace Lecoq de Boisboudran. Here Léon Augustin L'hermitte was introduced to a type of study of drawing that was based on memorization, a technique also used by James McNeill Whistler. In this way Léon Augustin L'hermitte could view a scene, especially a landscape scene, and more fully execute the painting back in his studio.

After attending the École Impériale Léon Augustin L'hermitte moved to Paris and began living with his friends and entered the École des Beaux-Arts, in just enough time to be able to attend the 1863 Salon des Refusés. During his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts Léon Augustin L'hermitte must have gained extensive training in painting, but for his debut at the Salon Léon Augustin L'hermitte recalled his earliest training at the École de Dessin and exhibited a charcoal drawing entitled Les Bords de la Marne près Alfort (The Banks of the Marne near Alfort). Léon Augustin L'hermitte earned his first medal, third-class, at the Salon in 1874 with Le Benedicite (The Benedictine), Le Bateau (The Boat), Une Rue de Saint-Cyr (A Road in Saint-Cyr). This same year Lhermitte spent s everal months in Brittany where Léon Augustin L'hermitte became fascinated with Breton culture; their costumes, their activities, their celebrations, the colorful nature of their life. During this early period in his career Léon Augustin L'hermitte executed compositions replete with the most minute details, depicting each diverse activity before the advent of industrialization overtook the village life of France. In 1880 Léon Augustin L'hermitte earned another medal, this time a second class medal, for La Vieille Demeure (The Old Women Remains) and Inauguration de l’Hotel-Dieu de Chateau-Thierry (Inauguration of the Hotel-Dieu of Chateau-Thierry). These charcoal drawings, or “fusains” as they were in French, were “…fully developed compositions…These works, in the subtlety of their handling of light, their preciseness of detail, and their emphasis on observation are among the earliest major ‘black and white’ drawings establishing the medium as suitable for exhibitable work not just for preparatory studies.” (Gabriel P.
